Service-learning projects conducted with non-profit agencies are increasingly becoming part of operations management education. An issue with these projects is that non-profit agencies generally have small or non-existent monetary budgets, which poses an additional challenge for students to overcome. This paper explores how a budget constraint can affect a service-learning project and the changes that were required to experiential learning activities in a problem-based learning pedagogy classroom. The lessons learned from the project are discussed to provide guidance on how student learning and instructor coaching can be modified to overcome issues with the student’s initial knowledge gap of how to create solutions under this type of budget constraint.
