Mitigating supply chain risk is a key concern for modern Operations Management. Threats to the smooth operation of a supply chain come from a myriad of sources and have varying levels of impact. Multiple strategies are available to management to deal with such risk. Thus it is imperative for an Operations Management course to develop decision making skills by helping students frame, analyze, and understand risk mitigation strategies. Using a real supply chain disruption problem, we illustrate how to frame it as a decision analysis problem to help students develop a deeper understanding of the problem. They also learn to pick a strategy using different managerial goals and risk preferences. Finally, we provide insights for both the student and instructor to make in-class discussion more meaningful.
