The caselet focuses on project classification, and the monitoring and controlling processes of project management. It tells the story of an IT department in which several projects had failed over a number of years. The company urged change, so a consultant was hired to provide the structure and tools for project classification, and monitoring and control. The resulting recommendations were twofold. One was to classify projects into two groups: high priority and low-to-medium priority using certain criteria. Different guidelines were provided to different project groups. The second was the implementation of a dashboard concept as a means of communication, where project status was color-coded to determine its status.
