The case is based on a real life business situation faced by Indian Railways and is intended to be a tool in teaching warehouse operations. The case highlights some key questions around the installation of an Automated Storage/Retrieval System (AS/RS). For example, what kind of storage policy and how many storage slots would best suit the business requirement? How much throughput capacity is expected and how adequate would that be? How many cranes would it be necessary to install? This case tackles these interesting questions and gives a structured approach to solving them. In addition it asks students to come up with innovative ideas to improve throughput.
