Conflicting Interests: The Manager’s Post That Fell Vacant

The case deals with the problems that arise in an organization when declared values and practiced values (technically referred to as espoused and enacted values) are not aligned. In this particular instance, the victim of the non-alignment was a senior banker who felt he was not given due recognition in terms of being promoted to a job for which he held all the right qualifications. The bank for which he worked always indicated that the right man could always look forward to a career he deserved as the bank did not believe in showing partiality of any kind. It would appear that this practice was not followed for the individual involved. The case relates the events which led to a crisis and had the potential to have a very negative impact on employees. They would begin to question the espoused value systems of the bank and the news would spread outside. The decision focus of the case is therefore on organizational values and their importance in maintaining the morale of employees.
