Bhavish Jugurnath, Sheereen Fauzel, and Nusrat Cader
University of Mauritius, Mauritius
Volume 13: 2018, pp. 181-198; ABSTRACT
With the advent of globalisation and modern technologies, the traditional methods used in accounting modules are more than ever being questioned. Furthermore, in the competitive world of today, the need to introduce a new way of teaching accounting is considered as a necessity since job requirements are trending towards a combination of theoretical knowledge and analytical skills. This empirical study was conducted to analyse the impact of emerging technologies on accounting teaching techniques in Mauritius, the main purpose of which was to obtain the viewpoints of students on the effectiveness of applying new technologies in their learning process. A survey was carried out at the University of Mauritius with 156 respondents and the main findings were as follows: (1) students prefer a hybrid method of teaching in their accounting education; (2) certain features of the traditional methods such as case studies and direct contact between the teacher and the students are still considered effective; and (3) the experience of real business situations via CD-ROM, specialised software and simulations are the modern techniques that students found to be most effective, useful and helpful in improving their performance.
