British-Thai Synthetic Textile Company, Ltd. (British-Thai) is a joint venture between Robert Van originally from Hong Kong and Surachai Pee from Thailand. The joint venture began in 1988 when Robert Van left Hong Kong and the family business in the apparel and textile industry for the express purpose of establishing his own business in Thailand. British-Thai is a typical sweatshop. Efficiency is the primary concern in this struggling industry, but possibilities include differentiation and government support. Managerial preferences are important in this family enterprise. How to achieve sustained profitability is a major issue.
