The world’s second largest mobile telecom market was shaken up in September 2016 when Reliance Jio launched its services at a scale and price unseen in the industry. Within a month, it had signed up subscribers at a rate faster than Facebook or Skype had. With 12 entrenched incumbents present in one of the world’s most competitive markets, India would likely see some structural changes in the telecom industry. Analysts were expecting a wave of mergers, acquisitions, and divestments. Also, with the telecom providers expanding both upstream and downstream, the lines between different players in the value chain were getting less blurred. The case is focused on the changing industry structure in the Indian wireless telephony industry, a shift in the value-chain and the competitive dynamics between the incumbent market players and the new entrant Reliance Jio.
