Forum“What I Try to Achieve by Teaching Business Ethics” and Panel “Overarching Goals of Teaching Business Ethics: What Should We Be Trying to Achieve?”
Volume 3: 2006, pp. 75-110: ABSTRACT
Forum: In the first issue of JBEE, five experienced teachers of business ethics described what they attempt to accomplish in the classroom. The following two short essays are a promised continuation of this forum. One is contributed by Christoph Lütge, Chair for Philosophy and Economics at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, and a member of the JBEE editorial board. The second is from Zucheng Zhou, professor in the Antai College of Economics and Management at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who recently joined JBEE as a coeditor. Both pieces concern dualisms, one type that Dr. Lütge recommends that we avoid, and another that Dr. Zhou urges us to embrace. Panel: The panel discussion took place at a Teaching Business Ethics Conference in Boulder, Colorado, USA, in June 2006. The conference was organized by the Center for Business and Society at the Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado. We present this discussion to allow readers to listen in on the conversation of experienced educators who have thought hard about the role of ethics in business schools. The programs discussed are located in the United States, but the issues are of universal concern to business ethics educators. The speakers are Joseph DesJardins, Professor of Philosophy and Interim Associate Provost and Dean at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University in Minnesota, Lori Ryan, who is Associate Professor of Management at San Diego State University, specializing in corporate governance and business ethics, James Weber, who addresses the question of teaching goals and methods from a management perspective who is Professor of Business Ethics and Management and Director of Beard Center for Leadership in Ethics at Duquesne University, and Donna Wood, who is the first holder of the David W. Wilson Chair in Business Ethics at the University of Northern Iowa.
