Business Ethics EDUCATION: Warning, Passion Can Be Contagious

To improve education we should follow suggestions made by Academy of Management President Anne Tsui and others, and make increased efforts to harness the power of the affective side to help us convey cognitive material. Prof Tsui specifically suggests that we infuse passion into what we do. We agree. Passion can help business ethics educators do a better job. First, passionate educators have a pedagogical advantage over dispassionate instructors, whatever the subject matter. Second, management educators should recognize and encourage the role of emotion, including passion. This can be applied in any area but seems perhaps easier, more natural, when looking at areas related to business ethics and corporate responsibility. Third, we also hold that the role of emotions, such as passion, is an appropriate topic within the area of scholarly research and publication. We suggest that passion deserves increased attention from business ethics educators. To reach students we suggest educators use current examples, make learning active, and strive for relevance.
