Golf Carts International: An Experiential Activity for Illustrating the Political Aspects of Strategic Decision Making Amidst Scarce Resources

This experiential activity illustrates the decision-making processes in scarce resource corporate settings. The activity simulates a corporate strategic retreat where three functional areas – marketing, operations, and finance – compete for capital investment to pursue strategic initiatives. The success of each functional area then is determined by their success in obtaining scarce resources in the competitive corporate environment depicted in the activity. This paper provides complete instructions for facilitating the activity, processing information, and handouts to use during the activity. Student reactions to the activity are provided gleaned from student journals and a preliminary assessment of the activity’s impact on students’ political skills.
