Just-in-Case and Just-in-Time Use of a Video Lecture-Tutorial to Teach Students to Manage Tone in Professional Writing
Kim Sydow Campbell
University of Alabama, USA
Volume 5: 2012, pp. 135-144; ABSTRACT
This teaching note discusses the pedagogical value of video delivery of a 15-minute lecture-tutorial on tone (the video lecture-tutorial can be viewed at proswrite.com) for professional students in writing-intensive skill courses. While such lecture-tutorials are aimed at understanding, a relatively low level of learning, it is the foundation of scaffolding for higher levels of learning. The use of web-based video is promoted because it provides both just-in-case and just-in-time instruction as students move through the abstract conceptualization and active experimentation phases of the learning cycle while engaged in multiple course activities.
