Volume 4: 2011, pp. 97-108; ABSTRACT
Jack in the Box experienced a corporate crisis in 1993 when hundreds of its customers
suffered E. coli poisoning. This article provides a case about that disaster and teaching suggestions
for using the case in the classroom. We recommend a two-stage approach to analyzing this corporate
crisis. The first stage describes the corporate crisis and gives students a chance to make
recommendations about how the situation should be handled. The second stage describes the
company’s relatively successful response to that crisis and provides additional discussion questions.
The case, in Part A and Part B, is consistent with this approach and is included in the appendices.
