Meeting the Challenge of Preparing Students to Effectively Choose and Use Communication Technologies
Robert G. Insley
University of North Texas, USA
Volume 4: 2011, pp. 109-118; ABSTRACT
The ever-growing number of communication technologies used in organizations has presented college- and university-level instructors with the major challenge of addressing these topics in ways that prepare their students for the work environments that await them. Doing so by using engaged learning teaching methodologies offers a practical approach for meeting this challenge. Through a series of in-class and online exercises students are engaged with the topic, starting with a description of each technology addressed and progressing on into how each is currently used in the workplace. In addition, students are either required or strongly encouraged to use a wide range of communication technologies while completing class assignments. Campus resources play a major support role by providing technology training for both students and instructors and easy access to a wide range of communication technologies. No doubt this approach is a time-consuming venture, but the results are very rewarding.
