Seek and You Shall Grow: Developing Students’ Skills in Seeking and Receiving Feedback

Volume 11: 2018, pp. 79-104; ABSTRACT
Feedback is a necessary part of learning and growth, but many of us, if we are honest, do not like to receive constructive feedback. Much of the management literature and training has focused on how to give feedback, but there is limited attention focused on how to seek and receive feedback. Feedback research indicates that feedback that leads to learning or growth requires a match between the type given and the type desired by the person who is the object of the feedback. To facilitate development of how students seek and receive feedback as a soft skill, we built in feedback exercises and experiential opportunities into our undergraduate leadership course. We provide an overview of the feedback activities used in the course, the learning outcomes, and initial observations. We offer modifications for use of the exercises in different educational settings and explore how developing this skill is beneficial to today’s young professional.
